Safe place and brighter future
Munirul is a 4 years and 7 months old child who used to live with his parents in a rural village, where his father was a daily worker in the fields of some landowners. His family was very poor and living hand to mouth. So, three years ago, his father decided to move to Dhaka city to find a better source of income.
Munirul’s parents got married when they were both very young at that time (his mother was only 14 and his father 20). When Munirul turned 7 months his mother went away from home with another man. In this situation, Munirul’s grandparents became worried about him as he had not been weaned. His grandmother who had a 3 year old daughter at the time took in Munirul in order to breast feed him as well. In poor families like Munirul’s one, every family member must work to support each other.
As Munirul’s grandmother was busy looking after him and her own daughter, she couldn’t contribute to her family’s income. She was looking for someone or someplace where she could keep Munirul while she was working at home, without worrying about him. Although Munirul had a step mother, as his father married again, she never looked after him.
The difficult situation was overcome by Munirul’s grandmother finding Phulki Day Care Center (DCC). She knew about Phulki from a Community Mobilization Committee (CMC) member and decided to pay a visit to the center. After the visit she was convinced to bring Munirul there. Now, she can work without worrying about Munirul’s wellbeing. Moreover, Munirul is learning to read and write and he follows the DCC’s rules with great care.
Munirul’s grandparents believe the education he is receiving will help him to attend regular school later and make him studious. They dream that one day Munirul will be a learned person and become a teacher.
